Registered Nurse

Summary of Job Duties:
* Perform resident assessment through use of direct physical assessment, behavior monitoring, various assessment forms, review of hospital records, laboratory results, resident medical records, and information provided by the interdisciplinary team, resident, and/or the resident’s significant others.
* Monitor residents for changes in condition that may indicate progress or deterioration in the resident’s overall status. Notify physicians and families of changes and transcribe orders received.
* Administer medications according to facility policy and monitor residents for therapeutic and adverse effects. Notify physician and pharmacy of suspected and actual adverse reactions.
Document medications on the (EMR) Medication Administration Record immediately when given or refused.

* Provide various treatments according to facility policy and as ordered by the physician such as, but not limited to, the application of topical ointments/solutions, application and removal of dressings, and provision of respiratory treatments. Document treatments on the (EMR) Treatment Administration Record immediately when completed.
* Triage emergency situations and provide appropriate first aid in a timely manner. Complete appropriate reports and consult with Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) Unit Manager or charge nurse on duty.
* Collaborate with physicians to assure timely visits, follow-up visits as indicated, signing of physician orders, and progress notes per policy and regulation.

* Supervise C.N.A.’s on their shift to assure proper timely delivery of resident care and completion of assignments. * Regulatory Compliance: Understand, comply with and promote all rules regarding resident rights. Educate and assure C.N.A. compliance with respect to resident rights.
Report all suspected, alleged, or witnessed physical, sexual, or verbal abuse immediately to the Administrator, Abuse Prevention Coordinator and/or designee.
* Training and Development: Attend all staff meetings and in-services as required.
Attend organization-wide programs and meetings to be informed and current on organizational strategies and programs.
Maintain competence with specified nursing skills by performing competency training as directed by the Director of Nursing (DON).

This step-down (intermediate) unit provides inpatient care for patients requiring services from the Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant subspecialties. Admitting diagnoses include, but are not limited to, leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, neuroblastomas, solid organ malignancies, sickle cell disorders and other types of genetic and immune disorders. In addition, adult stem cell and bone marrow donors are cared for on this unit.

Nurses are responsible for coordinating patient care as part of an interdisciplinary team. Nurses are required to be competent in the care of the hematology, oncology and pre-, ante- and post-bone marrow transplant patient, including the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy. Competency is established and maintained through an internal educational process. All registered nurses on 3 East must successfully complete and maintain the National Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses (APHON) Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Course, the APHON BBMT Core Curriculum, Hematology and Oncology 101, and PALS certification. Nurses are strongly encouraged to achieve their specialty certification: Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON).

The type of patient care provided in this area is complex due to patient diagnosis, the intensity of therapy, the criticality of patient condition, and the extensive patient/family issues that necessitate nursing intervention. 3 East will care for patients of the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is affiliated with the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a national organization dedicated to the care of pediatric cancer patients. In collaboration with and under the direction of an Anesthesiologist, administers anesthesia to patients as a qualified member of the anesthesia care team. Case assignment and oversight of the overall evaluation of the patient will be determined by an anesthesiologist. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist shall demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to provide anesthesia care appropriate to the neonatal, pediatric and adolescent population; documents appropriately in the electronic medical record.

Incumbent will participate in departmental and hospital programs for quality assessment and process improvement, identifying opportunities to improve patient care, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Hospital, Anesthesia and Perioperative Services Department.

* Performs an individualized pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient to include review of consultations, history and physical, and relevant diagnostic studies. Selects, obtains, orders and administers pre-anesthetic medications and fluid; obtains informed consent for anesthesia.
* Develops and implements an anesthetic plan based on the patient’s physiological response.
* Initiates anesthetic technique that may include general, regional, local and sedation.
* Selects, applies and insets appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for continuous evaluation of the patient’s physical status throughout the perioperative experience.
* Facilitates emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering medications, fluids and ventilation support.
* Provides appropriate handoff communication to receiving unit postoperatively, e.g., PACU, NICU/PICU.
* Implements acute and chronic pain modalities individualized to the patient.
* Discharges patients from the post-anesthesia care area and provides post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care as appropriate.
* Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management and administration of emergency fluids and medications using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
* Appropriately documents pertinent information in the patient’s electronic medical record, providing timely and accurate anesthetic records.
* Assists in the coordination and maintenance of anesthesia equipment and supplies.
* In collaboration with the anesthesiologists, monitors and evaluates quality of patient care and participates in department quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
* Attends and participates in departmental meetings and activities.
* Performs duties within the scope of practice in the state of Florida, practicing according to personal expertise, regulatory requirements and hospital policy.
* Prioritizes patient care issues and responds accordingly.

Job Duties

* Provide nursing care in inpatient areas, emergency department, infusion center and surgical services in partnership with the child and family that is individualized to meet the child’s or family’s unique needs and situation.
* Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate nursing plan considering the patient’s and family’s individual, cultural, ethnic, and religious values and beliefs.
* Deliver care based on family-centered care principles in collaboration with other medical professionals.
* Evaluate nursing care on an ongoing basis and revise the plan of care as appropriate.
* Accountable and responsible for the coordination and management of patients in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Requirements

* ASN required; Bachelor’s or graduate degree in nursing preferred (to be completed within 3 years of hire).
* Current Florida Nursing license in good standing required.
* Minimum 5 years experience with 2000 hours specific to NICU Level III required.
* NRP, ACLS; Air Medical Crew Core Curriculum Course STABLE, TNCC within 1 year of hire.

The following certifications must be obtained prior to employment start date:

* Valid American Heart Association BLS certification; must be valid for 90 days post start date.
* PALS certification.
